AI Won't Replace SAP Developers. It'll Expose Them
Every SAP team is asking the same question right now:
“Will AI replace our developers?”
That’s the wrong question.
The right question is:
“What happens to our developers when AI can write the code?”
AI doesn’t remove the need for engineers.
It removes the place to hide.
For years, a lot of SAP development value was measured in output: how many reports, how many enhancements, how many OData services delivered this sprint.
When an AI assistant can generate a CDS view, a RAP behaviour definition or a CAP service skeleton in seconds, output stops being the measure.
Judgement becomes the measure.
Let’s break this down.
1. Boilerplate was never the hard part
Writing a select statement was never what made a senior developer senior.
The hard part was always:
- understanding the business process behind the requirement
- knowing which standard object to extend, and which to leave alone
- choosing between RAP, CAP or no custom code at all
- designing for upgrades, not just for go-live
- knowing when the requirement itself is wrong
AI is excellent at the first draft.
It has no idea whether that draft belongs in your landscape.
2. AI amplifies whatever engineering discipline you already have
Give AI to a team with clean-core discipline, test-driven development and solid code review, and it makes them faster.
Give AI to a team without those things, and it makes them faster at creating technical debt.
AI doesn’t fix bad habits.
It scales them.
If your developers couldn’t explain why their code works before AI, they won’t be able to explain AI-generated code either. The difference is that now there’s ten times more of it.
3. Code review becomes the most important skill on the team
When code is cheap to write, code is expensive to trust.
The developer of the near future spends less time typing and more time:
- reviewing generated code for correctness
- spotting modifications that break clean-core rules
- catching security and authorisation gaps
- verifying behaviour with tests, not assumptions
This is why TDD matters more in an AI-assisted team, not less.
Tests are how you prove that what the AI wrote actually does what the business asked for.
4. Business understanding is now the competitive edge
AI can read your codebase.
It can’t sit in a workshop with your finance team and notice that the requirement contradicts how month-end actually works.
The SAP developers who will thrive are the ones who can:
- translate a business problem into the simplest technical solution
- push back when a custom development isn’t needed
- explain trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
That was always valuable.
Now it’s the job.
5. The risk isn’t replacement, it’s exposure
AI won’t replace good SAP developers.
But it will make the gap between good and average developers impossible to ignore.
When everyone has access to the same assistant, the output looks similar.
The difference shows up in the architecture, the maintainability and the upgrade path, usually six months after go-live.
Final Thought:
Stop asking whether AI will replace your team. Start asking whether your team is ready to lead it.
AI-assisted development isn’t a threat to SAP engineering.
It’s a stress test.
It rewards teams with:
- strong engineering fundamentals
- clean-core discipline
- test-driven habits
- real understanding of the business
And it exposes teams that relied on volume over judgement.
The tools have changed. The standard hasn’t.
